XANTERRA PARKS & RESORTS HONORED BY DEPARTMENT OF INTERIOR FOR ENVIRONMENTAL EFFORTS IN GRAND CANYON, PETRIFIED FOREST AND CRATER LAKE NATIONAL PARKS
For Immediate Release
DENVER , October 18, 2007 – Xanterra Parks & Resorts (www.xanterra.com) has received the Department of the Interior’s (DOI) 2007 Environmental Achievement Award in the “Partners” category. The award was presented to Xanterra for environmental initiatives in
Crater Lake ,
Petrified Forest and
Grand Canyon
National Parks . Xanterra was the only concessioner – and the only organization outside of the Department of Interior – to receive the award (www.doi.gov/greening).
The announcement comes on the heels of a major travel industry award for Xanterra’s environmental programs in
Yellowstone (http://www.xanterra.com/current-releases-392_1461.html).
In
Crater Lake
National Park , Xanterra was recognized by the DOI for the sustainable design and construction of the Annie Creek Restaurant and Gift Shop. Xanterra constructed the building in accordance with the U.S. Green Building Council’s Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) green building rating system, and received a silver level certification.
The Department of Interior also said Xanterra takes recycling and waste management at the Painted Desert Oasis in
Petrified Forest
National Park “to a high standard for any national park.” Xanterra’s smallest concession operation, the foodservice facility and gift shop achieves a 76 percent solid waste diversion rate by recycling 17 different waste streams. In addition to its extensive waste management and recycling programs, Xanterra purchases many recycled content products and supports local artisans through a sustainable agriculture program.
At the South Rim of Grand Canyon National Park, Xanterra was lauded for its green purchasing efforts which have grown to include procurement of some 100 green items ranging from sustainably produced wines to recycled Post-it Notes.
“We consider it a high honor to be recognized by the Department of Interior for our environmental efforts,” said Andrew N. Todd, president and CEO of Xanterra Parks & Resorts. “Because each one of the beautiful places where we have operations is distinctive, our environmental programs are customized to address the needs in each location. It is imperative that we develop programs beyond mainstream initiatives, and I believe the Department of Interior award indicates that we have been successful.”
The award recipients were chosen by a panel of judges from the DOI’s bureaus and offices. With the exception of Xanterra, recipients were Department of Interior employees, organizations or programs. The awards will be presented in November.
